I was commissioned to photograph the first series of Joe Lycett’s Late Night Lycett for Channel 4 / Rumpus Media. The show was broadcast live from Birmingham on Friday nights and was a hectic, madcap hour reminiscent of 90’s TV. Joe and Rumpus Media were keen to provide as many of the crew as possible from the Birmingham area so I was thrilled when Carl Palmer, the senior photography commissioner at Channel 4, suggested me to them.
Live TV work as a stills photographer in a tight, temporary studio with multiple crew and audience was incredibly challenging to get around the space between segments; the rule is not get in the way but try not to miss anything, Obviously all the camera operators rightfully have the best positions with all angles covered. There were many roaming operators too so lots to keep me alert.
Imagery was managed between Channel 4 and Multitude Media with editing on the hoof during ad breaks and immediately after the show. I loved every second of it.
